Jumhooree party strongly condemns the sudden arrest of its Leader Hon. Qasim Ibrahim
Jumhooree Party strongly condemns the sudden arrest of Jumhooree Party Leader and MP for Maamigilee Constituency Hon. Qasim Ibrahim by the Maldives Police Service under dubious charges. He had been previously summoned by the Police on two occasions immediately following the highly irregular vote of no confidence against the Speaker of the Majlis (Parliament) which the Government had won by a slim margin. The pretext for tonight’s arrest is that he might destroy evidence with regard to the baseless accusation levelled by the Police that he had attempted to bribe Majilis members while speaking at a political rally.
The Prosecutor general had today rejected the case that the Police had submitted. Rejecting the case the Prosecutor General noted that the case that was submitted was beyond the purview of Police duties. The Police arrested Hon. Qasim Ibrahim hours after the Prosecutor General rejected the case. Jumhooree Party believes that the arrest has been made in an attempt to deliberately obstruct and halt the political work being carried out by the Leader within the newly formed political alliance with all the major political parties including the Maldivian Democratic Party, Adhaalath Party and members of the Progressive Party of Maldives who support former President of Maldives Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Hon. Qasim Ibrahim’s arrest comes just days before a crucial vote of no confidence against the Deputy Speaker of the Majlis.
