Press Brief

The Elections Commission has informed Jumhooree Party (JP) that it should no longer use its flag and logo which depicts a crescent moon and star, saying it is too similar to the Presidential Flag. The Party Logo and Flag was however, approved by the Elections Commission and registered at the time the party was formed in 2008. It is noteworthy that while there are other institutions with a similar crescent moon and star as their logo, the Elections Commission has chosen to ask only Jumhooree Party to change its logo. The present logo of JP has become a widely recognized symbol of the Party and represents the party’s identity and brand. Asking the Party to change its logo is akin to destroying the Party name and its public identity.

The notice issued by the Elections Commission has no legal basis. The Party views this action as hindering the Party’s official duties, and calls on the Elections Commission to give political parties the requisite space to carry out constitutionally mandated, lawful political work. Since the Party Logo and Flag are assets of the party, and any dispute involving the party’s property must be settled according to law, the National Executive Committee of Jumhooree Party has decided to take the matter to court to reach a final decision.
