Jumhooree Party condemns the arrest of Adam Azim

Jumhooree Party condemns in the strongest terms, the arrest of Mr. Adam Azim, a vocal critic of President Yameen’s policies. He is held in remand at the Male’ prison by the Maldives Police Service under an arrest warrant issued by the Criminal Court today (8th June 2017), on charges of attempting to overthrow the government. This afternoon the remand was extended by the Criminal Court for a further a 6 six days in jail.

Mr. Adam Azim, who served previously as the Managing Director of the largest state owned enterprise, the State Trading Organisation, and who is currently the Vice President of the Maldives Trade Union, is the brother of former Defense Minister, Col. (Rtd.) Mohamed Nazim who is presently serving an 11-year jail sentence which, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has concluded, was unjust and arbitrary and called for his immediate release. Mr. Azim is a tireless advocate of justice for his brother, both nationally and internationally. Arresting him is an attempt to prevent him from carrying out this work. This is a clear sign of political intimidation and the suppression of independent voices. Jumhooree Party strongly denounces the government’s attempts to silence the opposition and calls on the government to immediately release Mr. Azim.
